The music of Kathy Bennett and Thom Perkins, Bennett & Perkins, is an exercise in storytelling with many of their songs set in the greater Conway area, their home base. Their songs share lost loves, lost lives and real life adventure, coupled with haunting harmonies and memorable arrangement of vocals and guitar. Whether it's a song about traveling to Cape Breton to a country dance or a love story between a man and his long-lost wife, their songs evoke a strong emotional response from the audience.

We are one of nine acts who will perform two songs. Three judges will select the top two performers, who will then perform additional songs to be awarded first and second prize status. The winner will get bragging rights and other fabulous prizes including studio time.

We hope our friends in Maine will come out to hear us compete.

Madison Old Home Week Concert on Aug. 8, 2011

Madison Old Home Week will feature a live free outdoor public concert on Monday, August 8, 2011, from 7-9pm featuring local musicians, Bennett and Perkins. The concert will take place under the stars at Burke Field in Madison, NH, located on Route 113 just 6 miles south of Conway. The popular folk duo has been touring regionally this summer and receiving increasing radio airplay. They were featured artists on Kate McNally's Folk Show on New Hampshire Public Radio in December.
Having started performing together in 2008, Bennett & Perkins released their first CD, The Kitchen Music Sessions, in the summer of 2010. The pair performs a bold repetoire of original music as well as their distinctive interpretation of american and traditional music that highlights their unique vocal and instrumental talents. Their repertoire includes artists as diverse as Richard Shindell to Karla Bonnof to Hoyt Axton; plus a growing number of original tunes that hold their own.

Bennett & Perkins both bring vocal and guitar playing abilities to the stage. But what makes their music special is how their individual strengths so well complement each other.

Thom Perkins began playing guitar at age 8 and was playing country fairs and coffee houses from Connecticut to California in the 1960s. His guitar playing is influenced by blues and ragtime and is often compared to Richard Thompson and Jim Kweskin.

Over the years, he has shared the stage with the likes of Pete Seeger, Jonathan Edwards, Bill Morrissey and David Francey. Perkins performed a series of workshops and shows in the Madeleine and Cape Breton Islands of Atlantic Canada including the Red Shoe Pub in Mabou, Nova Scotia. He is a long time resident of Jackson, NH.

Kathy Bennett is a classically trained vocalist who also began playing guitar as a child. Bennett on her own plays an eclectic mix of blues, rock, and folk. In the early 90’s, she performed in folk clubs in the Boston area and has opened for Martin Sexton. Kathy startles the audience with her at once gutsy and lacy vocals. Kathy is a Boston-area native who relocated to Madison, NH in 2003.

The duo recorded The Kitchen Music Sessions at Langdon Brook Studio. Engineered by the pair’s friend and fellow musician Davey Armstrong, the recording took place in the kitchen of his antique Maine farmhouse.

After releasing the CD in summer 2010, Bennett and Perkins have been frequent performers throughout New England, including multiple appearances at Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Maine’s largest acoustic music festival. They have been playing a variety of concerts and festivals this summer and are excited to be playing this latest concert in Madison so close to home for their friends and neighbors.
